Blubbermaschine und Soundraum
Blubbermaschine und Soundraum, installation, construction view, 2001

Blubbermaschine und Soundraum [Bubbling machine and sound box]

The installation consists mainly of two rooms.
In the first room (recording room) is a Perspex cylinder filled with water, with 8 microphones attached to it – 4 horizontally, just under the surface of the water, and 4 just above the bottom of the cylinder. With a compressor a nozzle in the bottom center is fed with air. The cables of the microphones lead into the second room (play back room).
There you will find a soundproof cabin (ca. 1.5x1.5x2.5 m) with a door. Speakers are attached on each of the four corners of the floor and the ceiling.
The aim is to be moved into the center of the water column when you stand in the Sound Box, to create a virtual sound space - in other words to give the listeners the feeling they are sinking in the water.
